Kate Hunt’s new sculptures, constructed of steel, wax, and newspaper, are explorations of material, form and space. In this exhibition Hunt is presenting two new series, Flathead Grids and Pedestal Stacks. The Grids are made up of small cubes of newspaper, bound with twine and impaled by sawblades, formed into a patterned grid. The blades were initially an accident; they were meant to be a stabilizing armature to hold the paper as the wax dried but Hunt found their sinister beauty irresistible. They were the perfect foil for the sensuous encaustic and orderly composition. The Pedestals are intertwined columns of newspaper which are engulfed by deep red encaustic, charred black, or left untreated. They are set up on tapered pedestals, accentuating the height of the sculptures.
