Gotthard Johnny Friedlaender was born in Pless, Prussian Silesia, as the son of a pharmacist. He attended the Academy of Arts (Akademie der Bildenden Kunste) in Breslau, where he studied under Otto Mueller and graduated as a master student in 1928. With a consistent interest in expressing emotion, Friedlaender’s compositions can be seen as visual poems, open to interpretation and welcoming the viewer to interact and react with each one differently.
